Choosing a Grass for Arkansas Lawns - FSA-2112
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cool-season (northern) and warm-season (southern) grasses are grown in Arkansas. Cool-season grasses grow best in the spring and fall and less actively in the summer. They stay reasonably green in the winter. Tall fescue (Festuca arundi nacea) is the most commonly grown cool-season grass in Arkansas. Warmseason grasses are slow to green up in the spring, grow best in the summer and go dormant after the first heavy frost. Warm-season grasses grown in Arkansas include bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.), centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides), St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.). Table 1 rates the performance of various grasses in Arkansas.

Detection of herbicides in the urine of pet dogs following home lawn chemical application.
Exposure to herbicide-treated lawns has been associated with significantly higher bladder cancer risk in dogs. This work was performed to further characterize lawn chemical exposures in dogs, and to determine environmental factors associated with chemical residence time on grass. In addition to concern for canine health, a strong justification for the work was that dogs may serve as sentinels f...
متن کاملEcology of grazing lawns in Africa.
Grazing lawns are a distinct grassland community type, characterised by short-stature and with their persistence and spread promoted by grazing. In Africa, they reveal a long co-evolutionary history of grasses and large mammal grazers. The attractiveness to grazers of a low-biomass sward lies in the relatively high quality of forage, largely due to the low proportion of stem material in the swa...

This publication is written for lawn care professionals, golf course superintendents, or anyone with a lawn. Its emphasis is on soil management and cultural practices that enhance turf growth and reduce pests and diseases by reducing turf stress. It also looks at mixed species and wildflower lawns as low maintenance alternatives to pure grass lawns. SUSTAINABLE TURF CARE LEAVE THIS SPACE HERE F...
متن کاملCompetition between a Lawn-Forming Cynodon dactylon and a Tufted Grass Species Hyparrhenia hirta on a South-African Dystrophic Savanna
South African savanna grasslands are often characterised by indigestible tufted grass species whereas lawn grasses are far more desirable in terms of herbivore sustenance. We aimed to investigate the role of nutrients and/or the disturbance (grazing, trampling) by herbivores on the formation of grazing lawns. We conducted a series of common garden experiments to test the effect of nutrients on ...
متن کاملGeese and grazing lawns: responses of the grass Festuca rubra to defoliation in a subarctic coastal marsh
In coastal marshes on James Bay and southern Hudson Bay, Canada, the grass Festuca rubra L. is heavily used for forage by both Snow (Chen caerulescens caerulescens (Linnaeus)) and Canada Geese (Branta canadensis (Linnaeus)). On Akimiski Island, James Bay, this grass occurs in a mosaic of short, heavily grazed patches and tall, lightly grazed patches. We investigated whether short plants are pri...
